Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery Visual Storyteller of the Year Award

Application Deadline: 11:59pm August 1, 2025

OVERVIEW

This award aims to celebrate excellence in photography and camera work by members of the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery.

This year, the award will be split into two categories recognizing the shot that made the story, and technical skill.

The winners will each receive $2500 and have their names inscribed on the honour board permanently displayed at the National Press Club of Australia.

The award for Visual Storyteller of the Year is unique as it is restricted to members of the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery only.

The Award is proudly sponsored by the National Press Club of Australia

OBJECTIVES

To reward excellence in photography and camera work for members of the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery.

ELIGIBILITY AND GUIDELINES

The award is open to all Press Gallery members who have held a Press Gallery pass to Parliament House in the past 12 months.

Entries will only be accepted for work published or broadcast between 1 June 2024 to 30 June 2025.

Submitted work must be the original work of the applicant.

Entries can be lodged by either the applicant or another Press Gallery member with the consent of the journalist being nominated.

Joint applications will be accepted. In the case of joint winners, in each category, prize money will be shared.

Following feedback from last year’s judging panel and press gallery members, this annual award will now be split into two categories. The first category is: The Shot: this is for the shot/s that made the story or stood out because it/they told a story without words. The second category is The Craft: a piece of work that displays exceptional technical knowledge of the craft.

Entries covering federal public policy and national politics are encouraged; however other topical issues are welcome.

PLEASE NOTE: You may enter both categories, but judges will only accept one submission per person, per category. Each submission may contain up to three pieces of work.

Entries can be submitted in any medium and should be accompanied by the following:

1. Which category you are entering

2. A brief summary of the work to accompany your submission

3. Your current CV

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants are required to disclose if their entry or related journalism is or has been subject to any form of litigation such as claims for defamation or libel etc.

In any event, applicants will indemnify the National Press Club, its judges, and corporate partners from any claim for damages and other financial settlements awarded by a court.

Award submissions are to be lodged by 11:59pm Friday 1 August 2025.

Applications must be submitted at www.npc.org.au under the β€˜2025 Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery Visual Storyteller of the Year Award’ website submission form.
