Judge Navi Pillay, 2025 Sydney Peace Prize Laureate, will Address the National Press Club of Australia to discuss Women, Peace and Justice.
Judge Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and eminent international jurist, is recognised for her unwavering commitment to defending fundamental human rights, promoting peace with justice, and championing the rights of women and marginalised communities.
Her lifeβs work is a powerful force against the global rise in impunity for war crimes and crimes against humanity, advocating for accountability, gender rights and the protection of human dignity – from South Africa and Rwanda to Myanmar and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Judge Pillay is in Australia just as she steps down from her role as the Chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel which has determined Israelβs actions in Gaza as genocide.
Her visit also coincides with 25 years since the adoption of United Nations Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, a landmark commitment to gender equality in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.
At a time when the multilateral systems and solidarity between nations is under threat, this Press Club address highlights Australiaβs obligations in upholding international law and ensuring peace, justice and dignity for all.
