The National Press Club of Australia

Richard Holden, Professor of Economics at UNSW Business School, Director of the Economics of Education Knowledge Hub @UNSWBusiness, co-director of the New Economic Policy Initiative, and President of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, will Address the National Press Club of Australia on "Is Australian Economic Exceptionalism Over?".

Australia went three decades without a recession—a streak only broken by a once-in-a-century pandemic. Can we do it again?

There are formidable obstacles and significant opportunities.

We may need to become a green energy superpower to replace the large economic contribution of our fossil-fuel industries. The decline of student performance relative to other countries will need to be reversed. Productivity growth will need to be significantly enhanced. And we will need to adapt to an ageing population.

Australia possesses an extraordinary endowment of natural resources required for a decarbonized global economy. We have a long history of stable and high-functioning political institutions. And we remain one of the most attractive places in the world to live.

In this talk, prominent economist and President of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia Professor Richard Holden will outline what it will take for Australia to repeat its world-beating economic growth record, maintain and strengthen an enviable social-safety net, and manage an unprecedented structural transition of our economy.
